Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Awards $1.2 Million Grant to Chabot Space & Science Center

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 8 — The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation of San Francisco has awarded Chabot Space & Science Center a $1.2 million grant over three years to increase Chabot’s reach and impact of informal science education programs within the Bay Area. The grant will be used to support and expand Chabot’s educational programs to the general public, with a focus on increasing the number of students served.

“Recent studies of California schools have shown that students lack adequate science instruction,” stated Alexander Zwissler, Chabot Space & Science Center Executive Director & CEO. “Chabot’s innovative programs, exhibits and classroom field trips can reverse that trend. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s funding will ensure that our impact on students’ lives will continue to grow with their education.”

Chabot Space & Science Center is a non-profit institution that traces its roots to 1883, when hydraulic engineer Anthony Chabot donated a refracting telescope to the City of Oakland. Celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, Chabot serves over 150,000 visitors annually in an 86,000 square-foot complex perched atop the Oakland hills. As a teaching center for science and space literacy, Chabot features a world-class planetarium, interactive exhibits, giant-screen MegaDome movies, and the only research-level telescopes regularly available to the public for live viewing in the Western U.S. Read the rest of this entry »
